Upbeat PC Is up and running!
If you haven't herd from our last post, we have a new website! A awesome new computer website, with a new blog. Unfortunately, this means we will not be updating 22tech anymore. This is not a bad thing, since you can just keep updated with our new site and blog! Memory Usage - IE8 beta 1 vs Firefox vs Opera
Recently, Firefox got an update to the newest version 3.0. Before, many people were complaining about how much memory firefox uses whenever you use it. It could go up to 600MB if you used it long enough!
But now, with the release of firefox version 3, Mozilla has promised to fix over 300 memory leaks. Memory leaks occur when the browser fails to dispatch memory that it has already used, (happens especially, though not always, when you go to a lot of sites in the same tab).
These are the version numbers of the browsers we used -
We went to the nba channel on youtube, and played all of the videos in the playlist "There Can Only be One" in high quality (if available). After a couple seconds after they all played, we went to Windows Task manager to see which one consumed the least amount of memory.
Here are the results -

Howto: Wine with Linux
How To: Run Your Windows Applications in Linux.
So you want to run your Windows applications on Ubuntu but don't know where to start? This guide explains step-by-step instructions on how to do it in a really simple way. Just follow step-by step.
Although there are numerous programs that can do this job – the most common way to do it is to use Wine (Wine Is Not an Emulator), and that is what we will use here.
To set up Wine all you need is -
A working 32-bit Linux OS installed to your hard drive (or through a VM) *You can do 64-bit but these instructions are for 32-bit only
An Internet Connection (or someone who does)
A little bit of common sense and patience
First of all we have to get Wine. To do this all you have to do is run the shell script that I made which will automatically put the wine repository in your list, update apt, and install wine.
First of all download the script from here.
Go to the folder in which you downloaded the script, and right click and go to properties.
Go to the “Permissions” tab.
Check “Allow Executing file as a program”
After that, double click on the executable and say “Run in Terminal”
The script will install wine and close, once it is done wine is installed! Simple right?
Next all we have to do is install an application. We all don't have the same applications – so as an example I am going to use Notepad++. It is a text editor more advanced than notepad (for programming) and it works wonderfully in Wine. You can download it here. (If you download yourself, use version 4.8.5 , the 5.0 beta does not work). Once it is done, go to the folder in which you
downloaded it, right click it and there should be an option saying - “Open with Wine Windows Emulator”. If that doesn't show up, you will have to take some extra steps. Go to “Open With Other Application”. Use a custom command – and put in “wine” (without quotes).
When you open the notepad++ installer, the installation screen should show up asking you which language to pick (Illustration 1). Then you can just go through the installation process as you normally would as if you were in Windows.
Afterwards, you would get an icon on your desktop that says, “Notepad++” . You would also get it in the menu (after it refreshes). (If it asks you to update, say no). Double-click it and there you go. You are running notepad++ in wine!
Not all software is that easy, but then again, some are. If you need help installing a particular program, you can google it, or search the Wine Application Database. This is a database which has a list of programs which work or do not work with Wine.
Also, if you are willing to pay, there are some proprietary wine solutions out there.
CodeWeavers CrossoverOffice This is a wine derivative and makes it very easy to install windows applications through its interface, I recommend to try the beta and see if you are willing to pay $40 for it.
CodeWeavers CrossoverGames This is like CrossoverOffice except it is meant for games.
Cedega – This is another application that helps you play your games on Linux. I cannot say anything about CrossoverGames vs Cedega (since I haven't tried them). The only thing I know is that Cedega is cheaper than Crossover Games.

The dream PC.
So now we're gonna do a post about the "Dream Computer". Of course, this is nothing CLOSE to practical or anything ... its just if we had unlimited $$, what is the best performing computer we could get?? The final price is outrageous - $27K. Atcually, we made 2 PCs, one is not as crazy as the other (a good 3K less).. we'll refer to the $27K one as PC 1 and the $24K one as PC 2.
CPU
Obviously intel is on top, for the really all out pc, we chose 2 intel qx9775's , giving us 8 cores of goodness. As for the not so crazy one, we just went with one intel qx9770, still intel's second most powerful quad.
Motherboard - For the all out one , we had to choose intel's only skulltrail motherboard, which unfortunately is more like a server board, it only supports PCIE x16 1.1 (not v2) , and it is only ddr2
800/677 FBDIMM. But it has support for 2 CPUs and it has 4 pcie x16 slots, and it supports upto 16gb of RAM. As for the not so all-out one , we chose the asus striker extreme 790i motherboard, which has support for all the new tech, but is not a skulltrail platform. Well , at least that was the original plan. On newegg, afterwards we saw a 4gb module of ddr2 800! So we were like wow, we can put in 16 gig! Problem - it was ddr2 , and 790i only supports ddr3 , so we had a choice, stick with 8gb of ddr3 or go with 16gb of ddr2, now , that is your choice, but we went with the 16 gig, but now i kinda regret it because of course - ddr3 is more future proof and all that, but in the future I guess we will see 4gb modules for ddr3. Hopefully. Also, we needed memory for the raid card (it had a ddr2 slot) but we will tell you about that in that section.

For the all out one - I chose 16gb of ddr2 667 fbdimms, 4x4gb .. they are only 667 but 16 gig .. wow. Obviously most people would like to go with 8gb of ddr2 800, but that's what PC 2 is for ;). For PC 2 we picked 8gb (2x 2x2gb) of ddr3 1600 RAM. In addition, we could probably OC that to ddr2 1800-1900 etc.
Video Cards-
For PC one, we picked four, yes four, 9800GX2s ... why? I don't know. Bragging rights??? But
seriously , that is why this is the all out pc, four 9800gx2s it is, maybe they won't be in SLI, but who knows? lol. For PC 2, we obviously didn't do that, we just went with "normal" sliied 2 9800gx2s for quad sli. Oh and of course, these aren't just any 9800gx2s, they are the evga ssc ones, so they are OC'ed to teh MAX!!
Power Supply - We picked the same power supply for 2 PCs, and it is the silverstone 1200w. We needed this power supply because it has a BUNCH of pcie pwr cables (6x 6pin and 2x 8pin) , but since in PC I we have four 9800gx2s, we would also need to snag 2 PC power and cooling cables that convert a 6pin power plug to an 8pin so that we need enough power. Those are about $10 each. For PC 2, we picked the same power supply, although we could've used something a bit less than 1200W (Maybe 750w or something).
Hard drives -
This is where half the cost of both PCs go. Yes. Hard drives. Why? We picked 4, yes, 4 SSD hard drives that are 128gb each all in RAID 0! Think how much speed that would give! And for backup and large files, we picked 2 1TB Segate hard drives. Of course, many people would
d
isagree and say for one - 4 ssd 128 gb's cost $12000, and you could just at the very least get three of them and get 3 1tb hard drives in raid 5. I don't know, that is another good option so you can put a lot of variety into this, but that is what we decided to go for! Of course, for this kind of raid you think we are going to use onboard raid?? Heck no! We chose a $1200 raid card from areca on newegg. It also benefits from having a ddr2 533 slot where we can put in 1 stick of memory for RAM. As for that the 4gb module was just perfect for that, so we can have 4gb of memory in our raid card (we have a 4gb ddr2 800 module in the all out pc too just for the raid card)! :P
Case - We got the latest silverstone tj-10 case. As for looks it may not be that great, but the construction quality is great, airflow and cable and routing are nice, but it is HUGE (a good thing). It will be the perfect enclosure!
CD/DVD - For this we picked to samsung sh-s203n drives (teh best performing dvd burners) and we also picked a $200 blu-ray lite on drive.
"Accessories"
These are the things that are not atcually inside the tower, or different accessories that are "not needed" such as speakers, CPU cooling, etc.
Mouse -
Logitech MX revolution. It is an overall nice-but-expensive gaming laser mouse. Coming really close to it is the logitech g5/g7.
Keyboard - Logitech g15- just a normal overall gaming keyboard.
Monitors - You are not gonna believe this - but TWO 30 inch XHD3000s for monitors. Those will do really well... they can even double as a TV! :P
Sound Card - HT omega claro plus - for $180. Creative used to be the best, but now with their driver issues and such, this looks like a great card to buy!
CPU Cooler - For the all out PC - we have TWO Coolit Freezone's (h2o cooling) , and for PC II, we have "just" one.
Operating systems - One Windows XP Professional 32bit, and one Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit, and a copy of 64 or 32 bit linux. We would do 64bit xp, but that has a ton of driver problems and such.

Free Software Of The Day:Disk Defragmenter
We all know that in Windows, it is a good idea to keep defragging your hard drive so that it can run at maximum speed. But is the one built in to Windows the most efficient and effective one? Absolutely not! But 22tech has found a program - Auslogics Disk Defragmenter, that is free and does a great job of defragging your HD, and it can also defrag removable drives/thumbdrives etc. You can get it here.

Free Software Of The Day: Pivot Stickfigure Animator
Have you ever seen one of those Youtube videos where stick figures are jumping around fighting and doing stupid stuff? Would you like to make your own? Well now you can with the Pivot Stickfigure Animator. This software is totally free, and with a little practice you can be making your own stick figure animations easily! You can move the sections of the sick figure and easily create a chain of animation frames that can be previewed as you go. You can use more than one stick-figure in the animation, and
even create your own stick figures using an easy to use visual editor that lets you assemble objects out of lines and circles. In addition, you can optionally set animation size, speed and more. Build a great budget PC for $280!
Here at 22tech, we love having solid, fast computers. But sometimes, that does not always happen. Sometimes you might need a basic computer, like for your kids or for your grandma that needs a new computer. This totals to only $280 w/ s&h, but does not include any peripherals or software, such as windows. (We recommend Ubuntu Linux).
CPU - AMD athlon 64 le-1600 $39.99
We picked amd for our budget pc, because it was really cheap on newegg, beating all of the intel's in that particular price range. Plus it is 45 watts and 1mb cache . Nice for a cheap proc. Oh, and did I mention you get a free t-shirt :P!
Motherboard - ECS 690G motherboard $49.99-$20MIR =$29.99
This motherboard was a cheap motherboard featuring the 690g chipset, so we figured we might as well go for this, even if it does mean having to buy an ecs mobo :-( .
Power Supply - Thermaltake W00070RUC 430W $39.99-10
What? You thought we were going to skimp on the power and use the lowly 300W power included with the case? Heck no! We chose this PS to give adequate power to components, and it even gives a generous PCI Express 6 pin cable in case we ever want to upgrade. Solid!
Case - Any cheap rosewill 29.99 case on newegg will do the job perfectly on a budget.
RAM - ADADA 2gb ddr2 800 $34 after rebate
Thats right folks, 2gb of memory in a sub-$300 computer! This RAM is rated @ ddr2 800 and will do the job perfectly , and may be a bit much on a budget. But this will come in handy , especially if you are planning to put Vista on this.
HD - Maxtor DiamondMax 21 250gb hard drive
250gb in a $250 pc! That is definetly not bad. This is the cheapest hard drive on newegg with 250gb, and the ratings are still very good. (Although you can never trust newegg ratings :P).
CD/DVD drive - Lite-on black sata dvdrom drive
For this budget pc, we could have easily gotten a dvd burner, but there is no point, since nobody with a cheap pc will burn dvds. Plus, this dvdrom is also sata!!!
Well.. that just about concludes our budget pc, which comes to $280 (inlucding shipping & rebates). Even though it is a pc on a budget, it is pretty powerful. It has a 2.3ghz athlon proc (which probably could be overclocked to 2.5 or 2.6ghz), comes with 2gb of ddr2 800 memory, and has a spacious 250gb hard drive! 10800GTX ... right ... lol
22tech recently found something extremely interesting we wanted to share with all of you recently. Apparently, a geocities site claims that they have a preview of the specs of a so-called 10800gtx, which will come out in The 3rd quarter of 2011, and it will play crysis @ 165fps with all of the eye candy on. Yea right. The specs of the supposed video card is on the right, but the photoshopper made one mistake - some of the edges are rounded, but som
e are not .. the fake picture is credited to SatchBoy of the maximumpc forums. Nice catch! But of course, it was a nice joke 
LOL .. we can start a funny pc thing of the day .. ... but first we need to catch up on open source software of the day. You can talk about the article on the forum here.

Finally! A free and great hosting solution - 110mb!!
We recently found this new great hosting site that you can use to host your webpages!! The site is called 110mb.com. It is totally free (but mysql costs $5 i think if you want that), stable, and there is virtually no offline time! On top of that, it offers 300gb of space, and 3000 gigabyte bandwith, although each file is limited to 10mb. There is also a great support forum in case you need help with anything, and if you get 350 posts on there, 110mb will give you FREE mysql! That is really amazing for such a cheap host. The NEW 9600gt :D.
Sorry, we are really late on this, but nvidia's new 9600gt just came out!! :D. It is a card that is priced around MSRP $180. It most benchmarks , it is a little bit behind the 8800gt, and performs on par with a 3870! Now Nvidia finally has a competitor to amd's 3850 and 70! And the future 9xxx seiries look promising :D. So far the only OC'ed 9600gt is evga's 9600gt, which ups it from 650Mhz to 675Mhz, but doesn't budge the memory clock. If I bought my pc now, then I would have an 9600gt instead of a lowly 8600gts now :( .. :P lol.

My new fav OS: Linux Mint Celena/Darnya
I have had a lot of linux os' and I have used a TON of operating systems during my 2 yr use of linux. I started with SuSE, Fedora, and a couple others, and eventually I setteled down with Ubuntu. (Ever since 6.06). I was browsing distros, and I found linux mint. Linux Mint is an OS based on ubuntu, but it has a lot of other features. It has a better theme, and it looks great, and it has a lot of applications to make using linux easier. The latest version is Linux Mint Darnya, and is based on Ubuntu 7.10 Gutsy. Try it out!
